Mitre Block FAQS

22nd Feb 2023

What does a mitre block do?

A Mitre Block is used to provide an excellent guide, when hand cutting joints at different angles. Mitre blocks usually provide the outline for 45 and 90 degree angles. These blocks make it easy for many different types of work, including cutting skirting boards and other items which have a tight angle cut. They are easy to use, so if you can use a handsaw - you can use a mitre block.

Are Mitre boxes worth it?

Mitre Boxes make many tasks a lot easier, they are usually plastic, metal or made from wood - and they are used with a hand saw, providing pre set angles to cut along. They hold the wood which is being cut in place, helping ensure a solid, clean and accurate cut.

How do you mitre a skirting board?

Mitre Boxes are great choices for people fitting skirting boards. If you are fitting skirting boards at a 90 degree corner, you need to cut a 45 degree angle in one piece of skirting board, matching it with the other piece of the skirting board - this allows the two pieces to fit together.

Is a mitre box good as a mitre saw?

Both options are good, although a mitre box retains greater precision for those having to cut precise angles.

What is the best saw to use with a mitre box?

Backsaws are the most commonly used hand saw with mitre boxes, but other types of hand saw can be used. The most popular types of saws to be used with a mitre box are dovetail saws, box saws as well as the previously mentioned backsaws.
