Heat Welding Vinyl Flooring: What Tools Do You Need?
Heat welding is commonly used when installing certain commercial sheet vinyl floors, creating a sealed joint between adjoining sheets. It is often specified in environments where hygiene and cleanability are particularly important, such as healthcare, education and other commercial settings.
However, successful welding isn't just about having a heat gun. From preparing the joint to trimming the finished weld, several specialist tools are involved.
The main piece of equipment is a professional hot air tool capable of maintaining the appropriate temperature and airflow for the flooring system.
Steinel professional hot air tools, such as the HM 2320 E and HM 2620 E, offer adjustable temperature and airflow for professional applications. The HM 2620 E, for example, provides electronic temperature adjustment from 50–700°C.
Always follow the vinyl manufacturer's welding temperature and installation guidance rather than relying on one temperature for every floor covering.
A speed welding nozzle fits onto the hot air tool and directs heat into the prepared groove while guiding the welding rod into position.
The nozzle needs to be compatible with both the hot air tool and the diameter of welding rod being used.
Before the joint can be welded, the seam normally needs to be correctly grooved.
Grooving removes a controlled amount of material along the joint, creating the channel into which the welding rod is applied.
Depending on the installation, this can be carried out using a manual grooving tool or an electric grooving machine.
- Vinyl Welding Rod
The welding rod is heated and fused into the prepared joint.
The correct rod should be specified for the vinyl floor covering being installed. Manufacturers often offer coordinating welding rods designed to complement individual flooring ranges.
Never assume that any welding rod can be used with any vinyl floor.
Once the weld has been completed, the excess welding rod needs to be trimmed to leave a smooth finish.
Specialist weld trimming knives, such as Mozart-style trimming tools, are designed for this stage of resilient-floor installation.
Trimming is generally carried out in stages according to the floor-covering manufacturer's instructions, helping achieve a smooth joint without damaging the surrounding vinyl.

Do All Vinyl Floors Need Heat Welding?
No. Not every vinyl installation needs to be heat welded.
Whether welding is required depends on the floor covering, environment and project specification. The flooring manufacturer's installation instructions should always be checked before deciding how joints should be treated.
This is particularly important because heat welding is a specialist process, and incorrect grooving, temperature, speed or trimming can affect the finished joint.
Choosing the Right Heat Welding Tools
For professional vinyl installation, think about the entire process rather than simply choosing a heat gun:
Groove → Heat → Weld → Trim
At Floormart, we stock professional hot air tools, flooring knives and specialist installation equipment from brands including Steinel, Wolff and Mozart, helping flooring contractors complete each stage of resilient-floor installation.
