Guide to Adhesives

Guide to Adhesives

Posted by Caitlin Davis on 22nd Jan 2024

What are flooring adhesives?

Flooring adhesive is permanent glue that adheres floor coverings to a subfloor or underlayment. There is a variety of adhesives for different types of floor coverings like, Carpet Tiles, Linoleum and LVT. There are solvent free adhesive options, which do not withstand colder temperatures as well as solvent-based adhesives. Choosing the right adhesive for the job is vital to ensure a long lasting and durable floor for the customer.

What adhesive should I use for Linoleum?

We recommend Eurocol 414 or F Ball F54 adhesive for laying linoleum flooring using a notched trowel. We stock this adhesive and specific trowel here at Floormart. Laying a thin coat of this adhesive is important before placing the linoleum down. Remove any excess adhesive with a damp rag or wipe.

What adhesive should I use for LVT?

We recommend Uzin KE 2000, F Ball F44, or F Ball F46 adhesive for laying LVT flooring. We also stock Karndean & Amtico adhesives which are also effective for laying Luxury Vinyl Tiles. It's important to choose the correct adhesive when laying LVT, especially if there is underfloor heating installed.

What adhesive should I use for carpet tiles?

We recommend F Ball Styccobond F41 for laying carpet tiles. This is a tackifier which creates a temporary bond. This will allow the carpet tiles to stay in place securely but also will allow for an easy uplift if required. Meaning that this is a very cost effective flooring option, especially in settings with children.

Is flooring adhesive waterproof?

Both solvent-based and solvent-free adhesive are waterproof. Most adhesives that are fully bonded are waterproof, however it’s important that the adhesive has fully bonded before exposing it to water or any other liquid.

How long does adhesive take to dry?

Usually adhesive will be fully bonded by 12-20 hours after the floor has been laid. However it’s advised to wait 24 hours after installation to move furniture back into the room, to ensure the adhesive bonds correctly.
