Does Vinyl Flooring Need Underlay?

Does Vinyl Flooring Need Underlay?

20th Dec 2022

It’s safe to say that most vinyl flooring or LVT flooring does not require underlay. The reason for this is that vinyl flooring is designed and manufactured with a base layer - meaning it does not need a further base layer, it can be applied to shard surface. Although there are occasions when vinyl flooring would benefit from underlay or a smooth surface underneath it, when the subfloor has damp or is incredibly uneven.

The aforementioned base layer that vinyl flooring has, is cushioned. This means that it does not need any underlay at all. The base layer also prevents the vinyl from moving around, if you choose to use an underlay with vinyl flooring, you are actually increasing the likelihood of the vinyl flooring becoming damaged or punctured, because of the soft material underneath it.

If installing vinyl in your property, instead focus on ensuring there is a level subfloor - which provides the best possible base for the vinyl, giving you a floor covering which looks even and in the best condition for the longest possible time.
