Screed Buying Guide

Screed Buying Guide

Posted by Tom Shaw on 24th Oct 2022

On the first investigation, there does not seem to be a huge difference between a concrete floor and a screed - with most of the ingredients between the two materials being very similar. When laid, however, it’s immediately obvious that concrete has a rougher finish than screed - concrete is ideal for structure and construction, whilst screed, with its smoother finish, is used as a finish to internal floors. Several different screeds are available, all with different performances and uses, but all are used to protect a concrete floor whilst providing a smoother finish for flooring. In this post, we look at a few different types of screed and their uses:

What Is A Screed?

Screed is a material with cement, and sharp sand within it’s ingredient list. It’s commonly used a finishing layer on top of internal floorings, providing a smooth appearance and increasing the floor's durability. Typically, the screed will be between 50mm and 100mm - depending upon requirements. Screed is also commonly used to conceal underfloor heating pipes.

Do I Need To Screed Over Concrete?

Although it’s not essential to screed over a concrete floor, it is recommended. Benefits include an even floor surface, covering components such as underfloor heating pipes and added durability.

How Long Does It Take For The Screed To Dry?

It’s impossible to give a definitive drying time for the floor screed. The screed can be made from different mixes, different thicknesses, and environmental conditions also make a difference. Instructions and information from the manufacturer should, however, provide a guideline.

Types Of Floor Screed

The screen is bonded directly to the concrete base, unlike the unbonded screed, which is laid on a membrane. Floating Screed is the best option for those installing underfloor heating.
