How to Damproof Concrete Floors

How to Damproof Concrete Floors

Posted by Tom Shaw on 13th Sep 2022

One of the biggest problems both domestic and commercial properties face is damp rising through concrete flooring. This is a pretty common problem and occurs when moisture levels are too high in the concrete, and are then passed up through the next layer of flooring - such as carpets and wooden floors. At Floormart, we are proud to supply a complete range of damp proofing products, which have been designed to tackle any damp proofing problems you may have.

Why does Concrete Get Damp?

Concrete is an incredible product, but it is porous. Its porous nature means that damp can travel through it - rising to the floor above. Although you may have inherited a property with damp, landscaping works - such as the removal of foliage or a tree from a garden, can change the moisture content of the ground, which can then lead to dampness.

Damp Proofing Extension & New Build Homes

If you are undertaking an extension, or building your own property - you should have been made aware that all new builds require damp proofing measures, which are to be installed during the building phase. Typically, this will see a Damp Proof Membrane installed between hardcore and the concrete slab of your floor.

Liquid Damp Proofing for Existing Concrete Floors

If you already have a concrete floor which is damp, then the best solution is to use a Liquid Epoxy Damp Proof Membrane. These liquid membranes are low odour, solvent free and have been designed to tackle low levels of moisture in concrete floors - when applied correctly, they are highly effective.

The liquid membrane is applied directly to the floor and creates a barrier, which means that water in the concrete cannot rise, and instead stays in the concrete slab. Liquid damp proofing can be more effective in some cases than a plastic damp proof membrane which sits on concrete, which can see liquid transfer across the surface of the concrete to skirting boards and walls.

In commercial premises, liquid damp proofing can provide an attractive finish, these products usually have a high shine and are available in a range of colours. The biggest advantage of using a liquid Damp Proof course, is that you do not have to rip up concrete floors.

To apply liquid epoxy DPM correctly, build up multiple coats, always follow manufacturer's recommendations and ensure that the concrete surface is free of debris or organic matter.

DPM Floor Membrane above Concrete

Another solution for those looking to fix damp issues in concrete flooring - is to lay a damp proof membrane above the concrete flooring. Slim line floor membranes are available, which isolate the concrete slab from your flooring. This provides a quick and easy method of covering a medium to large area of concrete.
