How to Cut LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) Flooring

How to Cut LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) Flooring

Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs) are a popular flooring option thanks to their durability, stylish appearance, and ease of installation. One of the key steps in fitting LVT flooring is learning how to cut it correctly. The good news is, it doesn’t require expensive tools and can be done with simple methods depending on the type of cut needed.

Score and Snap Method (Straight Cuts)

  1. Mark your cut line on the surface of the tile using a pencil and straight edge or ruler.
  2. Place the tile on a firm surface, decorative side up.
  3. Using a utility knife, score along the marked line with firm, even pressure. You don’t need to cut all the way through, just score deeply.
  4. Bend the tile back along the scored line, and it should snap cleanly in two.

This method is ideal for straight cuts and is suitable for most standard LVT planks and tiles.

Cutting Around Obstacles or Curves

  1. Create a paper template for the area that needs a complex cut, such as around door frames or pipes.
  2. Transfer the shape from the template onto the tile.
  3. Use a sharp utility knife for shallow curves or an LVT-approved cutter or fine-toothed handsaw for more detailed shaping.
  4. Cut slowly and carefully to maintain accuracy and avoid chipping.

Cutting with a Vinyl Tile Cutter

  1. Place the tile in the cutter with the marked line aligned to the blade.
  2. Press the handle down firmly for a clean, straight cut.
  3. These tools are especially useful for large installations and repeated cuts, offering speed and precision.

Safety Tips

  • Always use a sharp blade to avoid ragged edges.
  • Cut on a stable, safe surface away from your body.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection if using powered tools.
  • Dispose of offcuts carefully to prevent injury or mess.

Final Tip

Always measure twice before cutting to avoid waste and ensure a professional-looking result. If you’re unsure about any part of the process, test on a spare piece first.
