Carpet Tile Frequently Asked Questions

Carpet Tile Frequently Asked Questions

Posted by Tom Shaw on 24th Oct 2022

Carpet Tiles are one of the best options for commercial flooring spaces, and we supply carpet tiles to a range of commercial properties - from schools to businesses. Many customers get in touch and ask a series of questions about carpet tiles; the most commonly asked questions we answer below:

Do Carpet Tiles Need Underlay?

Carpet tiles have underlay attached to them - meaning that in a simple install, no underlay is needed. If you are using carpet tiles in busy areas, such as second-floor offices, it can be a good idea to install acoustic underlay underneath them to minimise noise transfer.

Are Carpet Tiles Waterproof?

Although carpet tiles are not waterproof, they are water resistant to a degree. So as long as you quickly mop up any spills, there should not be too much in the way of water damage. If your carpet tiles are water damaged, you can simply replace any damaged tiles.

Can You Lay Carpet Tiles Over Existing Carpets?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions we receive about carpet tiles - and the answer is yes, you can lay carpet tiles over existing carpets. There are, however, several considerations.

If the existing carpets are worn down in certain areas, the tiles on top of the carpet may sink. Another potential issue is the carpet tiles sitting too high underneath the door for the door to close. For these reasons, it’s often easier to remove the old carpet.

Are Carpet Tiles Hard Wearing?

Yes! The higher quality of the carpet tile, the longer it will last. The cheapest carpet tiles on the market tend to be thin, so can look worn quite quickly. Stain-resistant tiles are also recommended, keeping the carpet tiles looking good for longer.

Do Carpet Tiles Need Adhesive?

Many carpet tiles arrive with an adhesive on the back of the tile. For those who do not arrive with an adhesive system in place, carpet tile adhesive should be used. This adhesive is somewhat similar to PVA glue and makes for easy installation. Note that carpet tiles can be installed without adhesive - with many fitters using double-sided tape to stop the carpet tiles from moving.

Is it cheaper to lay Carpet Tiles or Carpets?

Carpet Tiles are unmatched when it comes to the initial purchase price and replacement/repair costs if there is damage to the carpet. If you keep an eye on a commercial flooring budget, then carpet tiles win every time.

Why do people use Carpet Tiles?

Carpet Tiles are an excellent alternative to wall-to-wall carpets. They offer all of the advantages of wall-to-wall carpet, with easy installation and very little in the way of maintenance.

Do Carpet Tiles stay laid down?

Carpet Tiles are backed with glue, which means that once the carpet tile is placed down on the floor - they stay in place. Because carpet tiles have glue on the back, subfloors must be both level and clean.

Can you lay carpet tiles yourself?

Yes! Many customers choose to lay carpet tiles themselves, which can be quickly perfected.

How long do Carpet Tiles last?

In a commercial environment, if carpet tiles are well looked after - they can last up to 20 years with some maintenance.

Can you see the Seams in Carpet Tiles?

Yes! But they are just noticeable. If noticing any seams is essential, you may be best choosing a wall-to-wall carpet - but you will lose all of the advantages of carpet tiles!

How thick should carpet tiles be?

Carpet tiles can be around 10mm thick, but we recommend a carpet tile with a thickness of between 6-7mm.
